How to choose the right school for your child in Lagos: an honest guide for parents

Choosing a school is one of the most significant decisions you will make for your child. Before you start comparing options, start with a few honest questions: How do you want your child to learn? What 21st-century skills should they have gained by the time they leave? What kind of environment will help them get there? The answers will tell you more about the right school than any brochure will.

Understand your child’s learning needs

Every child learns differently, and the best learning approach for one child may not be the best for another. Think about what kind of learner your child is. Do they come alive when they are building, creating, or investigating? Do they need a lot of structure, or do they flourish with more freedom and choice?

At KEY academy, we use a child-led approach built around play-based learning in the early years and project-based learning as children grow. Our co-learners (our term for teachers) support children to ask questions, think independently, and take an active role in their own education.

Look beyond academic results

Academic achievement matters, but it should not be the only measure of a school’s quality. Ask how children are taught to use what they have learnt. Can they collaborate with others? Can they express their thinking, solve problems, and recover from mistakes?

In a world that is changing faster than any curriculum can keep up with, children need more than the ability to memorise. They need to know how to think.

At KEY academy, our students work on real-world projects that connect classroom learning to meaningful challenges, all while building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and science.

How does the school prepare your child for the future

Consider how the school prepares children for the future. The world your child will enter as an adult will look very different from the one they are growing up in now.

Ask the schools you are considering:

How do you prepare children to adapt and think independently?

How do you respond to challenges you have not encountered before?

How do you encourage children to take initiative, work with others, and apply what they learn beyond the classroom?

These questions matter because a school’s job is not only to educate children for today, it is to equip them for what comes next.

Visit the school

Pictures on a website or social media can show you what a school looks like, but they don't tell the whole story. You should visit the school in person.

Take a look around the classrooms, outdoor areas, and see what learning materials and facilities are available. Check that the place is clean, safe, and friendly, and if there's enough space for children to play and learn. Ask honest questions about how learning happens.

Are the children interested and involved? Are they being encouraged to think and ask questions? Do learning spaces help children learn in different ways? A visit lets parents see how the school's teaching ideas work in real life.

Ask about parent partnership

A strong school does not operate separately from families, it works alongside them. Ask how the school communicates with parents about progress, challenges, and development. Are parents genuinely involved, or is their role limited to receiving end-of-term reports? Is there a real culture of openness, trust, and shared responsibility?

Conclusion

Before picking a school, make a list of your top choices, visit them, ask questions, and compare what you see with what's important to you. If you can, bring your child along and watch how they react to the place.

There isn’t one school that works for every child. The best school is one that meets your child’s learning needs, matches your family’s values, keeps them safe, and offers an education you trust.

At KEY academy, we are transforming what education can look like. Through our project-based approach, children develop academic skills alongside 21st-century skills like creativity, communication and collaboration they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world. We create an environment where curiosity is encouraged, ideas are explored and every child has the opportunity to discover their potential. If this is the kind of education you envision for your child, we invite you to book a visit and learn more about our school.
