"Education is not just about achieving grades, but about nurturing the whole child, equipping them with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world."
Damilola Okonkwo, Founder of KEY academy
Reflecting on the recent World Teachers Day celebrations, I want to take this opportunity to personally celebrate the incredible educators who over the past 5 years have been pivotal in our ongoing journey of transforming education in Nigeria. Their passion, dedication, and deep commitment to their roles as educators has been the cornerstone of our success at KEY academy, laying a strong foundation for the future. On a personal note, our co-learners (our term for teachers) have made this journey incredibly fulfilling, and I am incredibly honoured to call them my team.
Over the past few months, we’ve been working hard on a report that I believe speaks to the heart of what we do, and in the spirit of World Teachers' Day, I'm excited to unveil “Why Should I Choose Project-Based Learning for My Child?”. This comprehensive, research-backed report helps give parents, educators and all stakeholders a deeper understanding of PBL and its benefits, which I hope stimulates conversations and questions.
In Nigeria today, we sometimes perceive PBL as a foreign or “new-age” concept, but it is, in fact, deeply rooted in our own cultural heritage. For instance, the apprenticeship systems in South-Eastern Nigeria, where learning by doing has always been a key part of education, dates back centuries. PBL draws on these traditions, emphasising hands-on, real-world learning that helps students develop critical 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation.
At KEY academy, we believe that education is not just about achieving grades, but about nurturing the “whole child”, equipping them with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through PBL, students gain both core (numeracy and literacy) and practical skills, learning how to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, making the learning process not only more engaging but also more impactful. This becomes even more important as children get older, and as we continue on our path to launching our new secondary school campus in 2027, we are committed to project-based learning right up until the age of 18.
I encourage you to take the time to explore the report and see how PBL can be the transformative tool that empowers your child for a bright future. Let’s continue to work together to reimagine what education can be for our children!
