How chess education supports cognitive development in children

What begins as a simple game often becomes one of the most powerful ways to teach children how to think, make decisions, and persevere.

Introduction
Watch a child play chess for the very first time. The opening moves are almost always quick and impulsive. A knight is moved simply because it can move. A queen charges forward into obvious danger. Pieces disappear almost as quickly as they are placed on the board. However, something interesting happens over time. The child learns to pause and instead of reaching immediately for the next piece, they begin asking themselves a question they have never quite asked before: “If I move here... what could happen next?”
It is a small moment that many adults might overlook. But it represents something far bigger than learning the rules of a game. It marks the beginning of opportunities to develop habits such as careful thinking, planning, and reflection; habits that, when intentionally nurtured, can support children well beyond the chessboard.
After years of teaching chess to children, I have seen this transformation play out countless times. Children who arrive eager to move as quickly as possible gradually become players who observe carefully, weigh different possibilities, and grow comfortable making thoughtful decisions under pressure. The game changes them, not all at once, but steadily, quietly, and in ways that extend well beyond the board.
At KEY academy, we see chess as far more than an extracurricular activity. It is another opportunity for children to develop the same 21st-century skills that sit at the heart of our project-based learning approach - critical thinking, adaptability, resilience, perseverance, and the ability to make good decisions when it matters most.
Why learning to slow down is one of the most important skills a child can develop
Modern life rarely encourages children to pause. Many games are designed to reward speed and constant stimulation above all else. In that context, asking a child to sit still, think carefully, and consider the consequences of their decisions before acting can feel almost countercultural.
Chess asks children to do exactly that.
Every move is an invitation to stop, observe, predict, and consider before deciding. Rather than asking “What move can I make right now?” children who play chess gradually learn to ask a more powerful question: “What happens if I make this move?” Over time, they begin planning several steps ahead, weighing different options, and recognising that every decision carries consequences. These habits soon extend well beyond the chessboard. When these experiences are intentionally scaffolded by educators and parents, the thinking developed through chess does not need to stay on the chessboard. Children can begin applying the planning, reflection, and decision-making they practise during games to other situations, from solving a mathematics problem to organising a project or working through a disagreement with classmates.
The brain loves a good challenge
Research suggests that structured chess instruction can contribute positively to cognitive development and executive functioning, particularly when it is embedded within broader educational experiences. Executive functions are the mental skills that help children manage their attention, regulate their emotions, solve problems, and make considered decisions. These are not abilities children are simply born with. Like muscles, they develop and strengthen through repeated, purposeful use.
One reason chess has fascinated educators for generations is that it exercises several cognitive processes simultaneously, and does so in a context that children find genuinely engaging. To play well, a child must pay attention to the current position on the board, remember patterns from previous games, anticipate future possibilities, and adapt their strategy whenever something unexpected happens.
Every mistake becomes a lesson
One of my favourite moments during chess lessons has nothing to do with winning.
It happens immediately after a child loses an important piece, the moment when the reality of a mistake lands. Sometimes there is silence. Sometimes there is visible frustration. Occasionally, there are tears. Then we replay the position together.
Instead of focusing on why the piece was lost, we focus on how to learn from that move. Children begin to understand that mistakes are not something to be embarrassed about or afraid of. They are simply information - feedback that helps us understand what to do differently next time.
This is one of the greatest lessons chess has to offer, and it maps directly onto the way we approach learning at KEY academy. Unlike many activities where errors can feel permanent or defining, every chess game provides a fresh opportunity to begin again with new understanding. Gradually, children stop viewing failure as something that reflects on their ability and start seeing it as a natural and necessary part of getting better.
That mindset, called the growth mindset, serves children well far beyond the chessboard. Whether they are working through a difficult writing task, presenting a project to an audience, or facing a challenging science investigation, children who have learnt to process mistakes constructively become far more willing to persevere . They understand, from experience, that progress rarely happens without setbacks along the way.
Chess at KEY academy and beyond
Chess at KEY academy is never treated as an isolated activity sitting apart from the rest of school life. It forms part of our broader commitment to preparing children for life beyond school - for a world that will require them to think clearly, collaborate, and adapt to circumstances they cannot always predict. Throughout the year, our students engage in friendly matches, strategy sessions, tournaments, and reflective discussions about their games. They celebrate victories together and analyse defeats together.
Events like ChessMasters provide an exciting opportunity for our students to apply these skills in authentic, high-stakes settings. Watching hundreds of young people compete with focus, resilience, and genuine sportsmanship is always a powerful reminder that chess develops far more than technical ability. It develops 21st-century skills in future-ready leaders.

Conclusion
A chessboard may seem simple: sixty-four squares, thirty-two pieces, and a set of rules that can be learnt in an afternoon. Yet within that space, children develop habits that extend far beyond the game. They practise patience, concentration, resilience, thoughtful decision-making, and learn that mistakes are opportunities to reflect, adapt, and improve.
Whether a child goes on to compete or simply enjoys the occasional game with family and friends, these experiences can help shape the way they approach challenges and work with others.
